Assam Phase 1: 62 seats, 116 Muslim candidates but only 26 can win

By Mumtaz Alam Falahi, TwoCircles.net,

In less than a week the Phase 1 polling for Assam Assembly will take place. The vote will be cast for 62 seats. There are 116 Muslim candidates in the fray. Though the result will be announced about one and half months later, but what is clear today is the possible maximum number of Muslim winners in this Phase. Out of 116, only 26 can win. Why?

Because Muslims are not contesting all 62 seats, rather these 116 are gathered in just 26 seats. Eleven seats are reserved for SCs (3) and STs (8). There are two Muslim women among the 116 – Afsana Begum of NCP in Sarupathar constituency and Sarifun Nisha of Trinamool Congress in Jorhat. The maximum number of Muslim candidates is in Karimganj South. There are 19 candidates including 15 Independents. There are only 9 seats where only one Muslim candidate is in the fray.

Party-wise, All India United Democratic Front of  Maulana Badruddin Ajmal has fielded most –15 Muslim candidates followed by All India Trinamool Congress (10) and Asom Gana Parishad and Congress 6 each.

Overall, 485 candidates (38 women) are in the fray for the 62 seats. Among them SCs are 32(4 women) and STs 65 (8 women).
